So far we're hoping to meet up with some folks along the way, mostly in Virginia. If we can get at least 10 hours of driving in on Friday we'll be golden.
Currently the plan is to arrive in New Orleans on Monday after stopping at the Biltmore Mansion in Asheville, NC. We're also going to try to work in a stop at the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, but really it will all depend on how the timing works out.
New Orleans will hang onto us until Friday morning, when we hit the road and tear across the gulf coast for a 9-hour slog on I-10; destination: Jacksonville, FL, where we will party with my family for two days and three nights (and perhaps take a morning to go visit St. Augustine... and perhaps rent a scooter there to toodle around the beach roads and see what there is to see!).
Monday morning we leave Jacksonville and head to Savannah, GA. This will be the easiest destination of the trip, as it's a 3-hour bonk up I-95. Everyone who hears about our trip gets all wide-eyed and says "YOU HAVE TO STOP IN SAVANNAH" so, OK, 2 nights in a downtown hotel are already booked and we are GO for Savannah.
Wednesday morning sees the start of our unplanned excursion back North. We have to be home Saturday, but that's the only thing on the schedule. We've got options, we've got time, and we have St. Patrick's Day. Mmmm-hmm.
Our livers are going to be so very awesomely muscular at the end of all this. ;-)
Saint Augustine is DEFINITELY worth a trip, though I'm not sure I'd bother renting scooters! A1A Aleworks (brewery restaurant on the bay at the end of King St.), The Conch House (over the bridge on Anastasia Island, you eat in little huts over the water), and the Columbia (St. George St- traditional Spanish food) are great spots to eat. St. George St. has some fun shopping...
ReplyDeleteYou WILL love Savannah! Savannah at St. Patrick's Day rivals Mardi Gras in NOLA- it's absolutely INSANE. I have stories, but none fit for the internet!
Charleston is also a worthy stop on your way back North, but maybe save it for the next trip- have FUN!
I, too, have often heard Savannah is very much worth a visit. Maybe I'll get there someday.
ReplyDeleteSo. Very. Jealous.
ReplyDeleteSavannah is a pretty little town, especially the historic area.
ReplyDeletesince savannah was most of my college experience, a few places to check out while you guys are there:
ReplyDeletepizza at Vinnie Van Go Go was a college staple, the slices are HUGE
it is in "City Market" which is like Quincy Market-only TINY. bars and fun is here at night, in the day there are a few tiny cute shops

Gallery Esspresso was our coffee house

The art gallery at Poetter Hall which is on the corner of Bull Street facing the square across from the SCAD admissions gallery usually has cool art going on
you should also go to forsythe park and just wander around, big fountain, lots of grass in the middle of downtown
I lived at OHouse which is at the corner of Ogelthorpe Ave. and Barnard Street-its the big hotel-looking dorm next to the civic center
I hope you have a lovely time in Savannah!
Savannah harbor is beautiful. I love the cobblestone work.
ReplyDeleteMisty made a comment about going to the zoo while y'all are here in NOLA. YES. HIGHLY recommended. The Audubon Zoo is a really nice zoo, but it will definitely be an all-day thing, so I'd save that one for Thursday.
My idea for Thursday would be to hit Slim Goodies Diner for breakfast on Magazine St. (So. Very. Tasty) and head to the zoo from there, since it's on the way.
Can't wait to see y'all!
